John, I wish your lad a speedy recovery.
I am surprised that this issue has not been raised here before. We, as a matter of course change the silver supplied bot for a better spec cap head and have not had a problem.
The bolt breaking has been an issue since the introduction of the EVX and OTK modified the 07 onwards calipers to a longer bolt and nut that went through both sides of the caliper as on the EVXX but although improved the bolts still snapped but if the locking barrel was positiond correctly at least it stayed there.
Our cure on the 06 and 07 models was to drill out the originally blind inner half and put a longer better quality 4.5mm bolt right through but this also required the pads to be drilled, now however we have had no problems using our locally scourced bolts with the 08 karts.
