Having driven both R/Hand and L/hand drive BTCC cars and asked the same question of Ian Harrison at 888 Vauxhall, Ian said that it went back to the Super Touring days when they could re locate the engine lower and further back which presented an engineering problem with the steering column for some cars as it arrived in the engine bay just where you did not want it to be.
In addition to this some drivers have a LHD preference and from a personal point I always found that I also prefer LHD but I am unsure as to why as I spend most of my time in RHD!!
