Whiplash isn't a significant problem in karting. We are unrestrained, meaning our whole body tends to move rather than just the head/neck. A hard shunt backwards can cause whiplash, but with the smaller kids, they tend to fall out the seat first, thereby expending much of the energy.
From what I recall, most serious injuries in karting are chest injuries but these are pretty infrequent. In general, if you're going to break a bone it is most likely to be ribs, wrists, thumbs and collar bones. Collar bones tend to go when you're on your head, whilst ribs, wrists and thumbs are all steering wheel related.
All in all, I'd say the risks are insignificant compared to other activities. That's not to say we shouldn't be vigilant, but a balanced viewpoint is needed.
