I think raceinstructor's post makes a lot of sense.

With only the final counting for points in LGM the dropped score allows for a really bad day or inability to attend not messing up your whole championship. So it is more likely to favour race winners rather consistency.

Also if every race counted and say a driver had a bad first or second round, what motivation would there be to carry on with the rest of the championship?
