Use Talon sprockets. Make one cut with a hacksaw between the teeth, through one of the holes stopping about 2mm short of going all the way through. Place the sprocket cut over an edge and tap it hard with a hammer. The remaining uncut part of the sprocket will snap. When fitted, the 2mm tang stops the sprocket from closing up and causing chain wear. We used these on a 50mm axle for years with no issues at all.
