If it's just for fun and practice you could just go straight to the iame, plus the bambino kart club is doing a race series for them next year. It's highly likely it will become the msa engine in a year or so but unless someone has some other inside knowledge, I don't think it's a done deal yet. Given the Iame importers have managed to take cadet of comer and other classes off Rotax, I wouldn't bet against it.

The other option would be to buy an unsealed c50, it'll be much cheaper than a sealed one and it doesn't necessarily mean that it's been messed with or tuned, it could just be an earlier engine from the days they weren't sealed. That'd allow you to judge your pace against everyone else without putting a lot of money into engines that'll fall massively in value once/if the Iame is approved.
