The complex braces you mention are probably a Leath brace and are pricey at £350! As to whether they (or any neck brace) are proven usually leads to a lengthy heated debate here. My lad started with foam and found it too restrictive and it gets wet and soggy. We moved to an EVS R4 kart neck brace at about £100, less restrictive, better designed and I believe (I'm a former medic) it reduced whiplash with some shunts in Cadet for my lad. He stopped wearing one in Minimax but was bigger and more muscular by then.
