We have just moved recently from Honda to minimax.
Totally agree with Colin's comment about listening to paddock gossip. People like to tell others that they paid the earth for their motor so they can sell it on for big money or simply enjoy "impressing" others.
I picked up a minimax engine complete with carb, exhaust etc for £1200 which has won a club championship and run in well in super one. The carb is easy, nothing like a tillotson where the air screws are hard work and the ongoing rebuilding requirements of the diaphragm. Simply put a 148 fixed jet in and you probably won't change it until your lad has got used the size and power difference.
On another note, I have a WF engine which I have from when I raced. I'm not sur how well that would fit on a cadet kart as it was tricky getting it on a senior kart to start with. It is really wide and I think the clutch will be wider than the side pod. Secondly it weighs a ton!! Not sure I would want that tipping over on my lad.
