Generally speaking, I'm all for small government with little influence on our lives. However, in this instance I take the opposite view. These aren't problems that can be solved by individual charity (which I believe to be generally ineffective), they are problems that require the cooperation of governments to solve.

By reducing international aid these types of problems will get worse, not better. If you were living with daily hunger, political, religious or sexual persecution, bombs exploding all around you, systemic oppression, etc etc, you too would take the chance of migrating elsewhere. The "I'm all right Jack" attitude is not sustainable.

To put things into perspective, our foreign aid budget is 0.7% of GDP. That's £11.7bn. Our tax income is roughly £625bn. The amount we spend on international aid is comparatively small. I'm sure to many UK/US based consultancy firms are leeching these funds, but the point stands, we don't spend a lot.

Just to reiterate, our economic problems have not been caused by migrants, but must take some responsibility for the conditions in their own countries.

Lastly, nobody has said what they'd actually do with the migrants. The problem isn't going away any time soon.
