Your "boots" are known as shoes. You can position your shoes in various positions around the centre hub, also turn the drum to inner and outer. You can change the springs to engage the shoes at various engine speeds, they are colour coded. If you buy a Magnum type clutch, they are usually set to run as an outer unit fitted to the engine,( meaning that you can see the shoes) and fitted with white springs. If you turn the unit to become an inner, then simply remove the shoes and position correctly on the hub. If you get a banging and knocking noise, then you have got it wrong. There a lots of diagrams available to see.
