Our experience was BAD,
I bought an M0 from a chap online, met him in person and collected it and he was a genuinely nice guy. I checked it over and rebuilt it myself including new needle jets, screws etc .It worked fine and we tested it a couple of times before racing as they are renowned for being unreliable due to age and wear, we raced it at club level a couple of times and it worked well so I used it at a Super 1 meeting, we went well again and finished 3rd in the first heat so we were pulled into scrutineering where they checked the carbs. The M0 failed scrutineering because it had been “cleaned” at some point and there was surface scouring in the throttle body and the regs are specific that NO surface treatment is allowed. We were excluded from the meeting (in Scotland 250 miles from home) which wrecked our S1 season, without this we would have been top Rookie and a seeded driver in our first year. The carb was checked by Paul Klassenn and I together and there were no other modifications and to anyone else it looked as you would expect for a 20 year old carb, fairly scabby and oxidised.
So my learning from this was, if you didn’t buy it new get it checked by the Scrutineers or risk the ultimate disappointment for your son and embarrassment of being excluded. This is the only time we have ever been excluded for technical or driving reasons so it is really hard to swallow when so much rides on a £60 purchase of a 20 year old component.
As they say, buyer beware!!
