hi; these days, the sport is divided into 2 categories; commercial and sporting, which is run by the "MSA", a subdivision of the Royal Automobile Club who own motorsport in the UK.

Where are you located geographically?

Prior to 1988 ish, when the first indoor karting centre opened, you would have had to go down the MSA route and the attendant expense and hassle it necessitates ( a test to get a licence these days, strict rules on racewear, helmets etc which go out of date every so often years and chopping and changing of rules such as manadatory tyre/engine regs and equipment often being rendered reduntant and worthless over night; beware)

this is proper karting.................

or now, for a toe on the water, most commercial indoor or outdoor circuits will permit 8 year olds to drive in smaller, lighter karts; if it doesnt work out you may walk away for just a few pounds investment (industry standard a pound a minute).
if he gets hooked he can learn his apprenticeship here, on THEIR karts and racewear prior to looking at owning your own "cadet" kart which are available in both 2 and 4 stroke guise.

i ask where you are as with the maturing of commercial/corporate karting, there are some "pirate" (non MSA) outdoor circuits that run meeetings without the need of any MSA test/licence/expense; these include Strubby and East Kirkby in Lincs and Red Lodge in Suffolk; way cheaper racing than any MSA stuff

bon chance and ask if you want to know any more
