If you are reasonably skilled you can cut brake shims from metal sheet using a brake pad as a template.

Very thin shims(say 0.5mm) tend to be cut from a tempered metal so they spring back if they are bent.

If you treat them gently, you can make thin shims out of 'tin' cans but not aluminium drinks cans but I prefer 1mm sheet. (Do you adjust your pads to less than 1mm?)
