Watching the Junior Blues race was an education in how karting should be.
Jake Calvert was not the fastest driver out there, but his racecraft took him out in front and kept him there.
The others fought hard for their places; perhaps they could have delayed their fight and co-operated to get closer to Jake, but they are all in their first 2 years of driving.
Behind the scenes there was a further story. Owing to a misunderstanding, it appeared that Jake was not eligible to compete for the Junior Percy cup, but all the other parents agreed that they would prefer to "win it on the track" rather than by a minor technicality. ( Jake was eligible to enter the meeting under Clay Pigeon's aegis but was not aware that the Junior Percy was a trophy awarded for members of 2 Counties Kart Club, racing at the meeting. So a last minute membership was arranged)
As it was, they lost it on the track but all seemed satisfied that this was the appropriate result, especially as they had spent the day getting Jake onto the track as well. Nice to see that spirit of karting does still live on in some classes.
