Your engine is fine. At 10 there is loads to be taking in and thankfully kids at that age are like sponges but they need to be taking in the right stuff. Just doing it isn't enough as in the absence of training or coaching they will simply make the same mistake over and over.
The best thing I ever did with my daughter when she was karting was to swap karts with a talented young lad and it let her see what could be achieved on her kit. We then spent the next several months working on a corner at a time, then a combination of corners and gradually she gain more confidence in her own ability knowing what the target was. Pace wise we eventually got there but racing was never for her as she would never overtake (and race craft is a whole different skill). 5 years later she still speaks well of her karting experience as for most of the time she had loads of fun testing and making the right progress. It was un-believably frustrating at times for me mind but I would love for her to do it again but I wouldn't get hung up at all on having the biggest engine - that just masks problems. Focus on driving and set up and if your lad has it in him he will get there but most of all enjoy the experience.
