This gets sillier..... Not only did it always happen but I ADMITTED I'd done it WAY back in the 1960s. I was NOT the only one and I DID NOT invent it!

Damn it, when I returned in the 1970s (after student break) I needed to re-apply for my lapsed licence. My 'first' black plate race was ALL 'novices'. For the final, I noticed pole had brand new, un-scrubbed tyres and they would be DISASTEROUS (the mould release oil was still visible on the tyres) into the first corner. I 'discussed' it with grid 3 (I was on 5) and we 'decided' to 'help' Poleman into the first corner with the obvious results. It wasn't called 'loading' but it was IDENTICAL!

Imagine that it began with the Rotax if you wish..... it didn't!

Yes, it happened LESS back then simply because our starters and clerks-of-the-course were complete 'N*ZI's who would REGULARLY punish (usually, send to the back of the grid) those who DID break the 'non contact' rules. Anyone who remembers 'Tiny Tony' from Kim or Charlie Palmer from Kim will know what I mean! I can't remember the total number of punishments I got from Tony! Some WERE deserved, many others weren't..... however, you didn't argue with Tony or Charlie! The same thing with Reg Deavin at Rye

Secondly, this came about because of the discussions about standing start.... I have already pointed out to David that the SS makes sod all difference about (flash new fashionable word warning) 'Loading'.

What WOULD make a difference is if the 'train' (hence 'shunt'..... old name for it) CONTINUES to accelerate into and through the corner. If it does, and the lead kart is only as fast as the ones behind, then you CANNOT 'shunt' the lead driver..... simply because you can't CATCH him.

This can be effected simply by making the distance from the start to the first corner shorter or making the speed of crossing the start line slower. This means arrival at the fiorst corner will be still below maximum cornering speed and thus there will be no need to slow for it.

That was ANOTHER thing that was different then than now: the starters/CoCs would penalise the lead 2 drivers if the rolling start was too fast. The grid would be sent round again if it was too fast and, if it happened a second time....... back of the grid!

I do know the SS thing is a lost cause but, if we want karting to survive, we HAVE TO enforce the RULES. The sooner we start, the sooner the problems are STOPPED. Not just for the start of the race but for the WHOLE race..... in fact, for the whole MEETING!

The German saying covers it all:- "Punish one, teach 1,000!"

Ian
