Trust me, I wouldn't be doing 3 series as an owner driver and not love it... And you are probably right, there isn't a genuine answer right now.
And I'm sorry, but niche isn't the right wording as far as I'm concerned. A niche is something that no one else can offer. This is a monopoly, of people's hobby, full stop. It actually wouldn't matter what engine builder I use to be honest. I just think it's unfair to expect people to be forced into using a particular company if they want to run a certain series. That will always be my main concern over this. And that would be in whatever form it came in. It just so happens to be involving something I spend a lot of time, effort and money doing, so feel justified in having these concerns.
I'm sure that time will undoubtedly tell in this, and maybe my concerns will actually never be an issue. But, and it's a big but (not mine!), it may then be too late, and yet again, the prokarting scene will suffer...
