Finally got the motor all stripped down and I reckon it was the top ring retaining pin had worked loose and made a break for freedom through the top edge of the piston crown. It then (as you would expect) hammered itself into the piston crown and head until it finally went out the exhaust port. The marks on the top of the piston are indentical in size to the retaining pin. And there was me thinking it was 'mechanic failure' getting something in the air filter
