Not to mention that because of the loud noise of your engine you'd have to turn the volume on your iPod so loud that you'll almost invariably be causing permanent damage to your hearing!!!

Yes, I know I did it as well when I was young, played music as loud as the amp/speakers could take it and guess what: hearing problems now!
How many of you wear earplugs when you drive? Not many, I know!
How many of you know that once achieved the hearing damage is permanent and doesn't come back? Study the ear/hearing anatomy and you'll see why: hairs in the canal get broken due to high volume/vibration and they do not grow back, however young you are!

The reasons behind the MSA imposing upper levels on engine noise are not only to do with protecting our tracks from planning infringements but also about protecting our own hearing from damage induced by our own sweet sounding engines, situated much closer to our hearing than to that of our complaining neighbours!!!
