There is a difference between the advice that one is given and the practice.

The tyre (in this instance) has its best shape at 1.2 bar ; and he doesn't state whether hot or cold; and hence best mechanical grip.

The tyre has best chemical grip at between 60C and 110C depending on the mix. Again, without information from the manufacturer or proper test gear, you just don't know what your tyre works best at. And TKM tyres have very different characteristics from SL6's for instance.

Ideally you can attain both at the same time, but if you can't then you compromise. Most of us sacrifice mechanical grip for increased chemical grip by increasing tyre pressures and heating the tyres.

But, if the advice given for F1 tyres is anything to go by, the tyres operate correctly in a band that's only 0.2bar wide and about 10deg C wide and the difference between a good set up and a bad setup is very small. (Small enough that the difference in heating / pressure caused by the arrival profile at the various corners can be felt).

In theory we should be able to set up a kart so that the amount of energy put into the tyres will keep us with the boundaries. But how many of us have the data about how much more heat a narrow set of rims will put into a tyre or the payoff between toe-in drag and toe-in grip?
