I have used a similar trailer for my tonykart and kit.

I put a lid on the top made from plywood, which was hinged in the centre so that once the kart was off, I had a work top, the contents stay dry and I did not have to worry about a six foot piece of wood in the wind.

There were tie down points to attach straps too and it did not add that much weight.
