There are loads of good suppliers, shop around for price and advice.
Buying stuff on the market place is also ok, but you must know your stuff before you do.

My advice (as a horried mum at the speed my son goes around at) is that is will be worth every penny getting the best safety equipment you can.
The cheaper helmets are ok, but we found that most weigh more and of course are mostly designed for the adult skull shape, and our boy is a stick insect. Dont buy second hand whatever as the inner sponge mold to the individuals head.
You will often find race suits on ebay as the kids grow out of them, which is ok as you are not racing.

I would also suggest that you do go to a circuit that does the bambino or at least smaller karts, depending on your sons size. It is costly to travel and time consuming to stay over but I think the advice and experience your son will get will be worth its weight in gold, and could save you a huge amount in the long run.
We splashed out a couple of hundred quid for a days individual tuition at a Kent circuit kart shop (180 miles from here) and at that stage it was the best value for money, even if it did break the bank.
I think you should do the travel-honest
