You're right, I'm talking rubbish. I mean the crank throw.

The only difference altering the conrod length has is altering the sideways force the piston has on the lining. Theoretically the longer the conrod, the smaller the oblique angle made the rod relative to the cylinder axis. Thus improving reciprocating balance of the engine and increasing engine life.

However most manufacturers (cars) want to reduce the overall height of engines of they have shortened conrods, they've managed this without harming engine life.
