From a strictly engineering standpoint, when fitted with a longer rod, the piston will effectively spend more time at or around TDC and the little end will turn through less sharp angles.

A longer rod also reduces the force at which the piston skirt is pushed into the cylinder wall - quite easy to envisage if you think about the small end angle discussed above.

As to what effect these have on performance ... not sure.
