You say you have the lead but not the sensor? They are all as one. The end of the lead will either be threaded if it's a rear type as cadet49dad says, or have a bracket and a sealed end to it, which is the front type.

They both work with the Mychron4. Cadet49dad may have had a faulty one or some other issue?

If you have the rear type speed sensor, it needs to be pointed at a magnet on the axle by an L-shaped bracket of some sort. As you say, it can be pointed to an axle ring with a magnet imbedded into it or you can drill and tap the axle and put the screw into it. The axle ring or taping a magnet onto the axle is probably best.
