It appears that there are to be changes in the way that the combustion chamber volume can be measured for next year. There will be the option for scrutineers to use a digital burette instead of the current grade A glass burette. When using a digital burette only, the minimum volume will be allowed to read 11.6cc!!!
It is claimed that this is because there is a difference in the results of the two methods. It is claimed that there have been problems caused by the varying methods of use of glass burettes. It is claimed that a digital burette is more accurate.
Digital burettes cost around £600 !!! Tal-Ko must think nothing of their hard up DIY competitors! Furthermore, these digital burettes are NOT as accurate as they would have us believe. The spec of a glass burettte gives its accuracy as +/- 0.1%, that for a digital burette +/- 0.2% ! 0.2% of 12cc is 0.24cc - hardly what I would call accurate! This means that somebody could run 11.37cc and be declared legal!! Your digital burette could tell you its 11.6cc, the scrutineers can say 11.14, and its actually 11.37cc!!
If there were problems with the old method, Tal-ko should have specified one specific burette, and tied down the method of use. As usual with Tal-Ko decisions we are left with the worst of both worlds.
