Here's an answer I gave to someone else a while back:-

****************************

The choices are larger than you may be thinking.

Most of us here would own our own karts. As a stutent, it does get expensive....... unless Dad helps...... Oh...... I am now the Dad who DID help as my son is through Uni and out the other side!!

However, there is a 'class' called Club 100. Many Uni's are 'associated' with that company and you can get involved with the Inter Uni challenge/ See this article to see if your university is involved.

http://www.karting1.co.uk/bukc.htm

Secondly, you can do Club 100 Racing yourself. Thgey are (effectively) 'arrive and drive' but in better (faster) karts than you have been using so far.

http://www.club100.co.uk/

Thirdly, you can continue entering many of the Arrive and Drive races run (often quyite crudely) by many tracks. At Rye House (Hoddesdon) , the company called Motor Sport World used to run such eveing-races for teams of between 2 and 6 people.

Finally, you can buy your own kart and look after it! Damn it, if you are ANY sort of engineer, it won't be beyond you! I suggest you look at two possible classes which are renowned for low cost:-

ProKarts
You buy a twin engineed kart and enter races on a 'team' basis for an endurance race (2, 3, 4, 6, 12 or 24 hours). It is MINDBLOWING fun. The 'big race' of the year is at Le Mans...... yes THAT Le Mans! You can do this calss at many tracks, often called 'owner driver', Call Motor Sport World and speak to John Huff about it!

TKM Extreme
This is the cheapest and, without DOUBT the BEST, class. Do NOT be fooled that Rotax max is a cheap...... it AIN'T! Simply go to a track on their race weekend and SEE what is done. You CAN do it on most student's budgets if you use an ounce of sense and don't fall for the HYPE which surounds all classes. Tye House races on the First sunday of the Month, Kimbolton (Huntingdon area) races on the 2nd Sunday, Whilton mill races (Northampton) the 4th Sunday.

If you want to go to the TKM races, repost a message saying, "Newbie, Kim, Sun XYZ, wants to help!". Someone here will suggest you meet them at the track and they'll show you arround. You have to buy the teas and bacon sarnies, remeber!

Finally, carry on reading this web site. We are an AGRESSIVE bunch so don't be put off by the anger you willsee sometimes. We may not all LIKE each other but we are WELDED together by an utter LOVE of karting! If you read all of it, you'll begin to get an idea of the controversies and the characters.......
