I don't know about the WTP carb but your problem sounds like `dumping' which is a problem we have seen all too often this year in Comers with the Tryton. You are right to assume that fuel going into the air box is not supposed to happen!
The most obvious culprit would seem to be dirt so strip it down, give it a good clean and try again. test the pop off and hold is OK and then check again that it is holding pressure once re-built. Don't pump it up too much when checking the top end hold (with the Tryton this could cause more problems).
At least so far no one has come up with the usual answer on this forum `move to Honda'.
