R-plates are specific to Northern Ireland and I'm not sure that an R plated driver is restricted on towing a trailer. An L-plated driver is though.

Here's the piece of legislation dealing with R-plates.

Here's a list of motoring offences in Northern Ireland - as you can see towing a trailer with L-plates is there but not with R-plates.

Can I suggest two things... first take a look at your licence and see if it has the class to allow trailers on it. Second e-mail or call DVLNI to get confirmation.
