I also have HUGE difficulty in describing the Wankel as a 4 stroke.....

BUT......

I said this to Paul and he showed me EAXCTLY why it really IS a 4 stroke.

Secondly, all other references to the motor that I can fid refer to it as BEING a 4 stroke:

E.g.:

Wikipedia:-

"The Wankel engine is a type of internal combustion engine which uses a rotary design to convert pressure into a rotating motion instead of using reciprocating pistons. Its four-stroke cycle is generally generated in a space between the inside of an oval-like epitrochoid-shaped housing and a roughly triangular rotor. This design delivers smooth high-rpm power from a compact, lightweight engine.!"

Die Erfinden Gallery (life of Felix Wankel)

"The later KKM (Kreiskolbenmotor) type design constitutes a kinematic reversal of the DKM type. In a KKM type engine, a convex triangular rotor rotates within a static epitrochoidal housing. Intake and exhaust ports are provided in the housing wall. A four stroke cycle (intake - compression - expansion - exhaust) is performed in the chambers between the rotor and the wall. The chamber size varies according to the rotor movement."

Audi Uk
"It was in April 1954 that Felix Wankel discovered how to achieve a four-stroke engine operating cycle with a triangular piston turning around separate axes in a suitably shaped housing."

CitroenNet
"On 13 April 1954, the first Wankel rotary engine was built by NSU - Vier Takte in einer Maschine, das sind vier Erfindungen in einer einzigen (Four cycles in a single engine are no less than four inventions in one)."

FreeDictionary
"Noun 1. Wankel engine - a rotary engine that is a four-stroke internal-combustion engine without reciprocating parts "

WordWebOnLine
"Noun: Wankel engine
A rotary engine that is a four-stroke internal-combustion engine without reciprocating parts
- Wankel rotary engine, epitrochoidal engine"

Annoyingly, both you an I seem to be WRONG about it not being a 4 stroke!

Ian
