Yesterday was only the 2nd half-day my boys have been out on their Minimax. Being completely new to the sport, not having come up through cadet or anything, I have been relatively pleased with the way their lap times are tumbling as they build up confidence and experience. My younger boy (10), the faster of the two, finished the day averaging lap times 6 seconds faster than when he started in the morning. He is now doing about 47 seconds per lap but I understand race pace is a lowly 38 seconds or so (in the dry).
I know everyone is different but I was just wondering how near I could expect them to get to race pace over the next 6 months or so?
Once their times start bottoming out I would probably pay for a bit of tuition to get those final half seconds or so. Is that the right approach?

Any beginners advice on setup? The frame is a Kosmic (?). the tyres are old SL6s, not sure on the sprocket but it’s the one Matt recommended from the shop at rye (where I bought the kart from). The boys, who assure me they are not backing off, are reaching around 9800rpm at the end of the straight.
They are not getting the heat in the tyres, or the resulting grip. I tried pressures up to around 18psi yesterday but it didn’t seem to make much difference and they both seemed to prefer the handling on pressures around 14psi. When I got the kart both front wheels had 30mm spacers behind. Before they took the kart out yesterday I took the spacers out and moved the front wheels in as far as they would go, as someone trackside said this could help the handling. Any other beginners tips and tricks would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul
