October 2008 Newsletter Sunday 5th October 2008 Fantastic weather and a fantastic, record, turn-out. Thanks to all of you who took part! I was pleased to see an improved grid of cadets as well as good entries in all other classes. Racing was generally clean and free of incident which is always a bonus. I was concerned that the return of drivers who have been competing in national championships would introduce a more aggressive style of racing to the meeting but I was wrong. There was some excellent driving and fascinating battles throughout the day. Congratulations to our Driver of the Day, Daniel Barber (Junior World Formula), who has recently moved up from junior hire kart racing to WF. The turnout emphasises to me that the format is about right. As you may know there is a lot of thought being given to racing at Warden Law in 2009. The questionnaire we circulated last week has resulted in 3 responses so far (hardly a significant sample!). More responses would be appreciated. Believe me it is a hard decision for KNE to make as a move to MSA only racing would probably result in a number of drivers not racing at Warden Law next year. Likewise some drivers prefer MSA race meetings but would we get the grids? The much increased costs of staging an MSA meeting combined with small grids makes it a difficult decision. There were two instances of retaliation that were dealt with by Peter and myself on Sunday. While they were different in nature the fact is that both verbal and physical attacks are completely unacceptable. Please encourage your driver to understand that a complaints procedure exists i.e. by talking to one of the Clerks after the race. Chasing another driver or ramming his kart will always result in a penalty against the aggressor. Setting a good example as a parent is something that one or two parents also need to take on board (in my opinion). Running up onto the gantry and verbally abusing the Clerk is also out of order. Peter and I have worked together for at least 10 years. Clearly if the choice is to ban a driver (and his parent) or lose a valued member of staff, who volunteers to Clerk and act as the only ARKS examiner in the north east without financial reward, it is not a difficult decision to make. Yet again Roland raised the issue of a few karts being poorly prepared with the brakes being Roland’s main concern. Only this summer a Senior Max ended up in the car park as the brake pads were worn down to the metal. Please prepare your kart properly or if time prevents you from doing so ask Anton to do the job for you prior to the meeting. Practice Sessions We have seen several incidents recently during Sunday practice sessions caused by a driver slowing excessively (often leaving the circuit) without raising a hand or leaving it far too late to do so. If you know that you intend leaving the circuit raise your hand as you pass the start / finish line, keep to the left, and slow down with your hand raised. Likewise if you lose a chain, seize the engine etc etc whilst testing / racing raise your hand straight away to indicate to those behind that you are slowing down. The Kart Shop The Kart Shop at Warden Law needs your help! There is a questionnaire attached to this newsletter which we would appreciate being filled in and returned. There is a space for your comments so please give us what feedback you can. Particularly at this time of the year we try to run down kart tyre stocks so that we do not keep stock for long periods of time over the winter. As “serious competitors” like to purchase newly manufactured rubber it is a help if you pre order tyres during the week prior to a Race Day or Sunday practice. Anton can supply any type of new chassis and most pre owned karts at discounted prices. As a major consumer of karts and kart parts we have good contacts in the trade. Why not give us a try next time you are in the market for a replacement kart? Remember… Gift Vouchers are available now from the KNE reception or from The Kart Shop for the perfect Xmas gift. Arson at Warden Law On Saturday 20th September at around 10.30pm a fire started in our kart store adjacent to the LPG tanks. The fire quickly spread to our workshop destroying our stores, tools, service records and around 12 karts. Fortunately the business has overcome the set back and repairs will be complete within the next two weeks. However to prevent a recurrence we would like to find out who was behind the fire. Consequently I am offering a £500 reward to anyone providing me with the info we need. Clearly we have suspicions about a small number of people but we need more than suspicion. So if you have heard something that may help please give me a ring on 07720 405056 at any time to speak to me in confidence.
