A number of you chaps have mentioned details in this thread that need a little support, so I hope this info helps.
Race Instructor, I read your -”LG LCD appears sharper than the Panasonic Plasma”.
This is because LCD crystals do not produce their own light, so an external light source, such as a florescent bulb is needed for the image created by the LCD to become visible to the viewer. This is why they appear brighter and sharper in well lit rooms and are usually great for games consoles. The graphics can appear dull and lifeless on a plasma display.
However Plasma displays do handle motion tracking far better, so fast moving images like console games, sports, etc move smoother without any artefacts. It’s a trade off, but new LCD advances are improving these problems.
Nothing to do with processing power, just the way the differing technologies cope with the demands set upon them.
Plasma shows no motion blur, as some of you have put it. However you will have colour bleed on resolutions below the native HD 1024 x 768 and/or when you don’t use a good HDMI cable to connect your signal source. Cables are so important!
The red shell Samsung is a marketing gimmick, it has a hand blown red glass surround. Best to stick to the standard black bezel and save some money.
If you’re not sure about the whole High Def vs. Standard Def thing ask a high quality AV retailer to demo both setups. You can then decide if you want the extra. Not Currys or PC World but a real AV retailer like Richer Sounds.
In larger screen sizes, LCD televisions are more expensive to produce than Plasma televisions (although this difference is narrowing due to advancing production techniques). Plus the increase in refresh rates now running up to 120Hz.
The Gas in a Plasma display needs to be charged for the phosphors to light up in the RGB colours, this makes the unit very heavy and the result also produces a lot of heat, in turn using more electricity.
For all the above reasons we stick to the 50 inch rule in the AV industry. Keep it LCD until you need to go 50inch or more. This will no doubt change in the near future tho…
Attack 2001 - Now to dispel a myth. Every plasma TV is a completely sealed unit when manufactured. Each individual cell in a plasma panel is sealed. So, a plasma TV will never require any refilling, recharging regassing of its neon-xenon gas. It is not a Ford Mondeo with a leaky pipe. (sorry Mondeo owners)
Sadly, some salespeople at national retail chains have been known to tell customers not only that plasma TVs leak, but also that recharging the gas would be covered by an extended warranty! (This actually happened to well-known HDTV expert Gary Merson, who described the encounter in the September/October 2003 issue of The Perfect Vision.) If a salesperson ever tries to sell you this line, do yourself a BIG favour and head for the door.
Now for OLED, the organic light emitting diode. They have no need for a back light so only require a paper thin Matrix to carry the electronic signals. They can run these things from a watch battery. This will eventually revolutionise the world of AV and technology. It’s only in its infancy but Sony & LG are gonna be pushing this massively in the next few years.
Imagine a TV on the sleeve of your jacket or wirelessly updated adverts on a carton of milk, or even an interactive newspaper or magazine. It’s worth saving your pennies for!
