No Devon, that fraction you mention would produce/require VAST amounts of "sloshing" of the oceans! Just THINK how 'heavy' the Earth IS and how much force would be needed to MOVE it! Go and spin a car's wheel then then try to change the angle of its axis! The forces required are WAY beyond VAST!

Of course the core is molten (well....... the very 'core' may NOT be but that IS under discussion but the REST is!). I am discussing the SURFACE. Forget the seas. They would have evaporated in MOMENTS after THAT amount of 'force' was applied. It's the NUMBERS that you have 'wrong'! Look up that page that I have chosen, almost at random, about the earth's axis. You'll SEE the REAL figures: it is NOT 6 years to move 3 degrees, it's FORTY TWO THOUSAND YEARS!

next:----

Absolutely NO (zero, nil, nada!) energy is being used to TILT the Earth's axis! It is at the angle it is BECAUSE the forces being applied to it are MINUSCULE! In truth, those forces DO exist but they are SO small (when compared to our mass) that they will take 40,000 YEARS to move us by 3 degrees! And even then, that's an 'oscilation'; we WILL swing BACK again. We won't REMAIN tilted by a further 3 degrees as. over the following 40,000 we will swing back even MORE 'upright' than we are now!

next:---- "the earths poles are not exactly opposed".... err...... WHAT?

Are you trying to suggest that the Earth is rotating EXcentrically???? No, Devon. The Poles are EXACTLY where the NEED to be to make the earth rotate around its centre of MASS. The Earth does NOT have an 'axle' and thus there is NO other choice but for the Earth to rotate EXACTLY around it's two 'poles'. Yes, the Earth is NOT a perfect sphere but the LARGEST amount of 'error' is that the earth is 'fatter' around it's equator by about 26 miles than it should be to make a PERFECT sphere!

Think it through, the single highest MOUNTAIN is only 5 miles high! How could there be any MORE of a 'bulge' ANYWHERE than 5 miles WITHOUT THAT becoming the highest mountain!

In truth, in case this is not clear, the poles are DEFINED as being a line PERFECTLY joining (and extending beyond) the two places where the centres of the earth's rotation meet the surfaces. It's THAT way round; it's NOT that the Earth rotates ON it's poles! Please do NOT confuse magnetic north/south with the REAL 'poles'.

Ian
