Isn't part of the benefit of having even a soft road 4x4 ie a Freelander safety and the idea that any accident is likely to be below you rather than directly side on? As someone who has had the full range of Land Rovers the older Series Land Rovers were made to do a job that they still do fantasticly and would get you anywhere eventually but a Freelander is so much safer.

On the subject of fuel economy isnt it true that 7 people in a Diesel Discovery use less fuel and take up less space than the 4 Smart cars you would need to do the same trip............
