Ghost uses bitmap imaging, which is fine but can take a long time to actually image a system as it will take a snapshot of the disk in its enitrety and then compress the free space. I prefer Acronis true image for this method. For a file based method for windows try imagex and its gui frontend counterpart gimagex. These both play nice with WDS and utlising pxe boots. If you are imaging systems in the case of a total failure then you wont need to do anything with serials and keys if they have been activated before the images as you replacing a system and there wont be an issue with guids and SIDs. Otherwise you would need to run sysprep which would then mean reactivating windows. For linux try dd command line utility takes seconds to type very fast and reliable and will work with almost any file system you can throw at it
