You know the story, the boy’s parent’s turn up to watch their son in his first parade and proudly proclaim to the world. 'Look little Ian is the only one in step'.
While you dismiss the great unwashed, whether it be watching Big Brother or scrapping a living in some god forsaken hole of a 3rd (sorry, developing) world country. The fact is they are the majority and in a modern democracy, the majority, even if they are as thick as cattle, and as easily led by the media or politicians, are what count. They couldn’t give a fig about whether bullfighting is banned or not, many of them would probably watch if they got the chance judging by the numbers apparently involved in underground blood sports of one sort or another.
Banning Bullfighting in Catalunya is purely a political decision, akin to the welsh assembly abolishing student tuition fees. It's purely a snipe at national government. Incidentally one of the northen most provinces of Catalunya or Occitan, the Languedoc regeon of southern France has recently reintroduced bullfighting and it has proved to be very popular, don't here much about that on the BBC.
As for Gladiatorial combat, our civilisation has already descended to the point that this is again acceptable, what else is Cage fighting, even at the level tolerated for mass consumption, let alone the underground scene.
Life is cheap, it always has been and needs to be, so that life overall can survive.
