The Bridgestone/Firestone on Explorers was a monumentous calamity in Ford. This and the Toyota throttle 'problem' were mega litigations and they don't come along too often. Funnily enough, they generally tend to be related to ubiquitous features/functions and not emerging technology. Nevertheless, irrespective of the auto component, the scope for litigation never goes away where people's safety's involved and particularly in litigeous societies like the US.
When I worked for Ford of Europe, they had a very large systems function - there were over 1,000 of us in FoE in 1990 and I imagine a lot more today. 'I'd be fairly certain' (!) that the Ford R+D teams in Dunton [Essex] and Cologne have already a on-board system similar to the one I've described ready to go. I've no doubt the other car companies are at a similar level. It means there's no need for any of us to worry about developing such technology.
