1) There wasn't a design for speed cameras until one was designed and they faced similar cost of introduction. That's no argument against the idea of speed limiters.

2) It wouldn't have to work for all vehicles, just a large enough proportion of existing vehicles and all new vehicles. Checking they work would just form part of the MOT.

3) Cars wouldn't need to know where they are. Something similar to an RFID device through speed limit changes would be enough. Such a device would ne considerably cheaper than the network of cameras we have now.

4) This doesn't seem to be a problem for HGV's. Why should it be for cars?

5) The ID card wasn't scrapped because of cost, it was scrapped because it was entirely unnecessary and frivolous.

6) Wait a minute. The cameras are self-financing but are being scrapped because of cost?

7) We don't need to sell it to the "tax paying voter". Cameras aren't at all popular and would not be voted for by the "tax paying voter" yet they have still been put in place.

I don't particularly agree that speed limiters is the way to go, but they're certainly a viable solution if you take that view that speeding forms such a large part of the RTA problem.
