I think we can all agree that in the result of an accident, the faster a vehicle is travelling the more likely somebody will be killed or injured. But perhaps the argument is also, does speed itself cause more accidents? Because there are other factors to consider though, the additional concentration required to rigourously stick to severely enforced speed limits that regularly change should not be underestimated, this must surely detract from other aspects of safe driving.

Secondly on long motorway journeys, it's much harder to remain alert at constant speeds, especially artificially low speeds.
