Disagree, if the defending was banned, it would almost certainly mean more overtaking, which is what everyone wants.

The rot starts in karting, especially with timed qualifying, when you know that those behind you are generally slower and that if you can hold them off for a couple of laps on soft but cold tyres, you can clear off. I've seen dozens of cadet age races in France & Spain where for this very reason, not one racing pass has been made all weekend. Have you noticed how good Alonso is at defending but not so good at passing, unlike Hamilton, of which the reverse could be said.

The salvation of UK karting and other motorsport is mixed qualifying, which does the same thing as a no blocking rule by other means. i.e. if you block faster drivers, you will end up in the gravel. Learning this earlier enough installs the correct approach in a driver.
