The only hardware difference between a Mac, a Windows PC and a Linux PC these days is the operating system and associated applications. All three are perfectly capable of performing all the tasks a typical computer user requires, assuming they have been correctly setup. If you need to perform a wide variety of tasks (accounting, gaming, media creation, programming etc) then Windows based PC's are your only choice. If you focus on media creation, Macs can be a pretty good choice (albeit an expensive one) but Windows PC's are equally capable. If you want to do all the above for free, but without the polish, Linux is great and as cheap as you can get.
Don't get me started on the other Apple products such as iTunes (useless), iPod (useless), iPhone (useless), iPad (pointless)!
