What caused many of the problems with the banks was that, effectively overnight, the banks had to double their reserves cover for loans. I think the figure was 5% of loans covered by deposits, which was then taken up to 10%. That is where all our money went. Most banks went to the government cap in hand to achieve this rate of cover, whilst some, such as Barclays, went to the shareholders.

The government lied and stated that their input would get banks lending again, especially to small businesses, but this could never be the case. The new regulations prevented it.
