.. The "HOON laws" ... drafted in after a spate of fatalities resulting from idiots street racing and showing off.
You would be surprised how many kids distroy their tyres doing meaningless "burnouts" , often followed by impromptu drag races, on city streets ..down here.
Unfortunately not all of these kids are as skillful as Hamilton.
After the deaths of several innocent bystanders, these laws were introduced to control stupid drivers.
It is also illegal to "race" away from stop lights ( unnecessary acceleration ?) especially if there is someone beside you doing similarly.

Having said that, (i support the law !) the stupid thing here is that the police did not foresee the type of (bad) publicity this can bring.
This is a classic case where a little "discretion" and a subtle friendly warning would have been more sensible. Now Australin cops will be ridiculed for months over this.!
