Few would disagree that the BBC is one of the best broadcasters in the world. That's not the point. The point is why a terrestrial domestic broadcaster should be funded through a compulsory domestic subscription... particularly given that the subscription is on the basis of possession of a TV receiving device and the funds are used in a plethora of ways unrelated to TV reception.
If one bread manufacturer was funded by compulsory subscription, it would be unfair and unreasonable to expect anyone else to compete against it. There is of course the argument that the road fund licence is similar but then we pay one road fund licence to drive on one set of roads only.
Make the licence fee an optional subscription to BBC TV services and let the BBC reorganize itself on the revenue it can raise from it.
