Hi DavyBoy

Sorry to hear you have lost a friend to asbestoses. I can not remember when the stuff was banned or removed from common use but it was used widely in the home about 40 years ago. The pad you set a smoothing iron on was generally asbestos and it was used over the rings on gas cookers for years to spread the heat more evenly. However, I have heard that MDF, you know the stuff used to make furniture, shelving etc., has been refered to as the modern asbestos. I expect that it is quite safe unless you are cutting it.
