Im at brookes in my second year at the moment and thinking its a fantastic course. The uni is really nice and the social side/oxford is fantastic too.
Like the others said, the course is hard work although by no means impossible. Maths is the thing you will struggle without. It seems the level you need to know is what is taught at A level (so you could find some Alevel syllabuses to see what you should be knowing). If you have done that and are not stupid when it comes to designing and physics you will be fine :-) Although the course is hard work, as long as you keep on top of it, its not that bad really....i ceratinly find time to be a "student" :-D
Look at other unis though as i found some are more practical perhaps than brookes, iv heard only good things about coventry uni, loughbough (i think) isnt bad, and i recently met a load of lads at the walter hayes trophy from central lancashire uni and they loved there course!!!
The karting and motorsport societies are great, but havnt found the time for formula student yet as it seems a big commitment...
Hope some of that helps JACK
