""So, The road safety issue is complex, and speed control is, I agree, only ONE aspect of it. But, if reducing speeds saves lives, why object to it? I repeat...what is the problem? Nobody is saying that you shouldn't raise the profile of OTHER road safety issues, such as training, road signs, car construction, or whatever you like. WHy do you have to try and REDUCE the effect of speed related safety issues? ""
Vic, you agree that speed is only one aspect of many, you also agree that we've been fixated on speed for all those so many years with less than acceptable outcome, so wouldn't the natural conclusion be to actually START looking at the other aspects as well? If only to complement the good work already done by speed awareness/enforcement? No, instead we're motoring on with the speed! Destroying perfectly designed and laid roads in the process, as well as the whole SPEED AWARENESS attitudes as people are already seeing through the whole thing!
In case you didn't read John's post, he is involved with speed reduction in his immediate surroundings, he's identified that the ALREADY implemented so called solution not only isn't having the desired effect, but is CREATING more problems because it is poorly implemented, or THE WRONG SOLUTION! He is fighting it!
And that's what we're all doing here on this thread (you might have to go back to the original post): we're fighting to stop what we think is the WRONG solution! We are talking of course of a BLANKET lowering of NATIONAL SPEED LIMIT! We don't want to stop talking or dealing WITH SAFE SPEED, we just want it to be talked and dealt with in an effective and efficient manner AND in conjunction with tackling the cause of the other remaining contributory factors to the majority of the accidents! Not only with the minority incidents where SPEED is ONE of the contributory factors.
Need I spell it any more than that?
Dan
