I'm involved in a business that sells a lot of stuff through eBay and we ship most items RM first class. The rate of non-delivery [read loss] is probably about 5% or so. Its cheaper for us to send a second, replacement item, when something's lost rather than using a more expensive delivery service. We send anything with a value greater than GBP10.00 by UPS [we've special rates with them].
A word about eBay. Its not the responsibility of the seller to ensure delivery, just to ensure that the item has been posted. In other words, if the seller can provide proof of postage, they're off the hook. So my suggestion is that you ask the seller immediately for proof of postage. If they can give you that, then you're really at their mercy for them to do something for you. If they can't, then raise a dispute with eBay/PayPal.
In the event they give you the proof of purchase, you need to plead with them that you have paid them in all honesty and maybe negotiate that they give you a 50% refund. If the seller's reasonable, they will do that. I would. In the event they are unco-operative and ar5ey about the whole thing, don't be afraid to leave them negative feedback.
And in future NEVER buy anything of value on eBay without a signed for AND insured courier service.
