Sorry, but this wasn't "an extreme weather event" it was a few inches of snow. Try driving 200 miles inside the Arctic circle during winter that is pretty extreme driving in pretty extreme weather,but ,done on a daily basis by the inhabitants and regularly by visiting British Marines and squaddies , we used to go every year for 3 months at a time and we had no special winter tyres,just snow chains,ok this sort of weather may hit the UK every 20 years or so on average ,but, that doesn't mean to say it WILL NOT happen for another 20 years it MAY happen annually for the next 3 years and snow chains aren't that expensive and can be stored in the garage or house most of the year and put them in the boot over winter just in case.

Yep I love snow and playing with the kids in it,but , I don't see why it should bring the country to it's knees.

Just for reference of an extreme weather incident. Northern Norway 1985 was a very cold year we had temp's of Minus 35 with a windchill factor taking it to minus 43, we actually drove across a small fjord to avoid driving 30+ miles around, now considering that was salt water and frozen solid, that must have been extreme.
